![]() Tummy TuckA tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed from the lower abdomen and the muscles of the abdomen wall are tightened. This procedure can drastically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. The procedure is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies have stretched their abdomen so far that it does not return to it's normal shape. Tummy tucks are often performed in conjunction with liposuction. The best candidates for an abdominoplasty are men or women in good health and relatively good shape, but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to exercise. A tummy tuck will generally result in a scar from hip bone to hip bone, extending down over the pubic area and around the belly button. The scars fade considerably over the first year after surgery and are easily concealed under a swimsuit. The scars are certainly much easier to conceal than a fatty or flabby tummy! Additionally, two drains are placed at the time of surgery and are removed in a week or two. Risks include infection, blood clots, fluid collections, and poor healing. All are treatable but this procedure is a major operation and it requires some work on your part. |
